The George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) honors a century-old commitment to be active in cutting-edge research and development in the engineering sciences. Through its institutes, centers, and special programs, SEAS extends academic investigation not only into departments at other schools within GW, but also into industry and other areas of society. This expansion of the classroom introduces students to the true nature of engineering as practical, interdisciplinary, and socially active. Various research activities apply advanced technologies and relevant research findings to all practicable areas of instruction.

SEAS fosters an environment in which students can prepare themselves for rewarding and productive lifelong careers as engineers, applied scientists, and computer scientists. Research programs at an engineering graduate school are the full-scale equivalent of a teaching hospital attached to a medical school: the learning experience is more practically relevant and career-oriented when coupled with the physical reality of actual situations.

At SEAS, a variety of focused research institutes enables one to pursue directed, in-depth study in a chosen field. Qualified graduate students may be supported through research grants, scholarships, and fellowships. Research assistantships often support thesis and dissertation efforts. Working side by side with University faculty, visiting professors and scholars, and scientists from government and industry, one can participate in the development and harnessing of emerging technology.
